Overview · tickets · tides · routes

Mont Saint Michel is a granite tidal island in the Manche department of Normandy. The commune itself is free to enter. The billed monument is the abbey on the summit, run by the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN). Mix those two facts up and you either overpay or queue for a ticket you did not need.

This guide separates village access, abbey tickets, day trips from Paris, tides, and the walk across the bay. Prices and hours below are taken from the official abbey practical-information page. Partner widgets show live sale prices, which can differ from the CMN tariff.

Mont Saint Michel tickets: what you actually buy

You do not buy a ticket “for the island”. You buy a timed or open-dated pass for the abbey rooms, cloister, church and Merveille. The parish church of Saint-Pierre, the rampart walk, and the shops on Grande Rue sit outside that ticket.

If you only want photographs from the causeway and a walk on the walls, you can skip the abbey. Most first-time visitors should not: the architecture that made the UNESCO listing in 1979 is the stacked abbey, not the crêpe stands.

Village free, abbey paid — do not confuse the two

The commune of Le Mont-Saint-Michel is open without a reservation. CMN is explicit: the village is freely accessible with no ticket and no time slot. Security screening still happens at the abbey door. Folded strollers are allowed; suitcases and large bags are not. There is no left-luggage office inside the monument.

Count 45–60 minutes from the official car parks to the abbey entrance, including the free Passeur shuttle and the climb. The abbey sits at the top of roughly 350 steps. If you cannot manage stairs, treat the ramparts and the western terrace views as your visit — the abbey has no lift.

When the mount is quiet enough to photograph

Coach tours from Paris typically unload late morning. Be on the ramparts before 09:30 or after 16:00 if you want the skyline without a wall of phones. Equinoctial spring tides draw extra crowds — check the tide page before you pick a date.

  • Weekdays in November–March are the thinnest, except school holidays and the free first Sundays.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday beat Saturday even in summer.
  • Sunrise from the causeway is the reliable postcard. Sunset works if you accept the walk back in the dark.

How to get there without guessing

There is no train station on the rock. Pontorson–Mont-Saint-Michel is the rail head. From Paris, the usual patterns are TGV Montparnasse → Rennes (or Dol-de-Bretagne) then the Keolis bus, or the longer Saint-Lazare → Caen → TER to Pontorson. Driving is simpler if you are touring Normandy; parking is paid and run by the Établissement public, not by the abbey.

A packaged day trip trades money for a 12–14 hour day with a guaranteed abbey slot. DIY is cheaper and more fragile: miss the last bus from the causeway and you are in a taxi desert.

What to see once you are through the gate

Do the abbey as a vertical walk: crypts and Notre-Dame-sous-Terre, then the Romanesque nave, Gothic choir, cloister, refectory and the west terrace. That is the sequence the building was designed around, and it matches the visitor route. The village is a single main street plus the rampart loop — walk the walls on the way down to skip the souvenir crush.

If you only have two hours on the island after a Paris coach drop-off, skip shops until after the abbey. The last entry rule is one hour before closing; tablet audioguides stop 90 minutes before closing.

How to save on the official tariff

Under-18s in family groups enter the abbey free. EU citizens and legal French residents aged 18–25 also enter free — not in tour groups. Disability card holders plus one companion, and jobseekers with a certificate under six months old, are free. The first Sunday of January, February, March, November and December is free for everyone. Those rules come from CMN, not from resellers.

Partnership reductions (Scriptorial in Avranches, Cité de la Mer, Grand Aquarium Saint-Malo, some SNCF and Brittany Ferries tickets) drop the adult rate in high season from €16 to €13. Bring the original ticket, not a screenshot of an email.

US, UK, Australian and most non-EU visitors aged 18–25 pay the adult price unless they hold French residency papers. “Student” is not a CMN category.

Use this site as a map, then book a dated ticket

Start with abbey tickets if you already have a car or train plan. Start with Paris day tours if you do not. Use the price breakdown if you are comparing a DIY day against a coach. Official CMN booking is covered on the official-site page so you can see both channels without mixing them up.
